Started in 2001, the .NAME domain extension is the only one meant for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to buy john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Existing third-level domain names remained functional.
